The LIR Locator tool has been updated. It now contains a number of new options and features, including information about Local Internet Registries (LIR) with 4-star IPv6 RIPEness. The tool is mostly targeted to the members of the RIPE NCC, but also contains a public map accessible to everyone.

Authentication Methods Used in the RIPE Database by Denis Walker — last modified 30 Nov, 2016 11:22 PM

Prompted by a discussion at the last RIPE Meeting, we found out how many maintainer (MNTNER) objects are registered in the RIPE Database and what type of authentication methods are used to secure the data covered by these MNTNER objects.

Password Management in RIPE Database by Kaveh Ranjbar — last modified 17 Oct, 2016 08:58 AM

Passwords are the most used authentication method in the RIPE Database. This mechanism has two major design problems. The MD5 hash is public, when running a single query (not for bulk queries). And in case of email updates, plain text passwords are sent by email to update the database. Find below some recommendations on how to secure your objects until these issues have been addressed.

At RIPE 63, the RIPE NCC was asked to consider possible options for Internationalisation of the RIPE Database content. This article provides a quick overview of the current situation as well as possible developments and challenges.

Proposal to Display History of Objects in the RIPE Database by Kaveh Ranjbar — last modified 17 Oct, 2016 08:59 AM

Objects are created in the RIPE Database and are updated regularly by their maintainers. However, at the moment there is no mechanism to see the history of changes to an object. There are many cases where RIPE Databases users want to investigate the history of changes to an object. We would like to propose building this functionality in the RIPE Database.

Presenting Object Metadata in the RIPE Database: Object Tags by Kaveh Ranjbar — last modified 17 Oct, 2016 08:55 AM

In addition to the actual data presented in a RIPE Database object, there is additional data, not directly related to the information contained within an object but still valuable from an operational point of view. The RIPE NCC is proposing a method to optionally display this metadata alongside the actual object. This will make maintenance of objects easier and will improve the overall quality of data in the RIPE Database.

Future of RIPE NCC Technical Services by Kaveh Ranjbar — last modified 17 Oct, 2016 08:55 AM

As the new Chief Information Officer at the RIPE NCC, I’d like to take this opportunity to share with you some of my ideas about the future direction of the technical services we offer to the community. This includes focusing on RIPE Atlas as the RIPE NCC’s data collection system, RIPEstat as the RIPE NCC’s consolidated point for data retrieval, service agreements and other plans for hosted services like K-root, authoritative DNS servers and RIS data collectors, and a greater focus on data analysis.
