RIPE NCC Country Report: Southeast Europe

Suzanne Taylor — 21 Apr 2020
We examine the Internet landscape in eight different countries in Southeast Europe as the next in our series of RIPE NCC Country Reports.

Go straight to the report

This time, instead of looking at an individual country as we've done so far, we decided to look at eight countries in Southeast Europe that could give us a broader view of the development of the Internet landscape in this part of the world and how these countries interconnect with one another, as well as the global Internet.

We decided to include Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia. We felt that these countries were the most comparable in terms of geography, population, technical infrastructure, market size and number of RIPE NCC members.

The Southeast Europe Country Report takes a detailed look at the region's history of development, its IPv4 and IPv6 holdings and its opportunity for future growth. We examine Internet routing within the region as well as its access to the global Domain Name System (DNS), and we identify the different paths and providers offering transit into the region from the rest of the world. The analysis is based on data collected by RIPE NCC measurements tools, as well as a few external data sources.

The RIPE NCC previously produced country reports on Saudi Arabia, Russia and Germany as part of an ongoing effort to support Internet development throughout our service region by making our data and insights available to local technical communities and decision makers alike.

Additional Country Figures

As part of the Southeast Europe Country Report, we included figures showing the different operators that provide international transit into Serbia, Albania and Croatia as three examples from the region. However, you may be interested in seeing the results for some of the other countries included in the report, so we're making all of them available here (with the exception of Kosovo, for which we don't have enough data):

Albania
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Croatia
Montenegro
North Macedonia
Serbia
Slovenia

Data Sources

We want to highlight the fact that these country reports are based on publicly available data. We hope they give you an idea of the kind of information and analysis that's possible using RIPE NCC data. If this report inspires you to learn more about the RIPE NCC tools used to develop it - and perhaps even to pursue your own research into some of these topics - you can learn more here:

Future Reports

We plan on producing several more country reports this year and have already identified a number of different countries/regions that we think might be of interest and which are spread across the RIPE NCC's service region of Europe, the Middle East and parts of Central Asia.

However, we're always interested in hearing from you about what would be most interesting and valuable, and we plan to produce smaller reports alongside these larger ones, so please share your ideas with us below and let us know what you would like to see!
