Olympic fever didn't escape us here at the RIPE NCC!

As every nation beams with pride for its medal winners, we decided to see how well the top ten medal-winning countries are doing with their IPv6 planning by analysing indicators of IPv6 deployment, and to see if there are reasons to be proud of that too.

Gold medals Silver medals Bronze medals Medal count % IPv6 networks % IPv6 end-users
1. United States of America 46 29 29 104 10.3% 1.43%
2. China 38 27 22 87 13.6% 0.30%
3. Great Britain 29 17 19 65 20.0% 0.018%
4. Russia 24 25 33 82 7.2% 0.39%
5. South Korea 13 8 7 28 2.9% 0.01%
6. Germany 11 19 14 44 33.0% 0.43%
7. France 11 11 12 34 23.4% 4.5%
8. Italy 8 9 11 28 16.6% 0.02%
9. Hungary 8 4 5 17 12.7% 0.1%
10. Australia 7 16 12 35 18.5% 0.35%

Table 1: IPv6 deployment metrics for the top 10 medal-winning countries at the London 2012 Olympics. IPv6 networks data from http://v6asns.ripe.net/ . IPv6 end-users data from APNIC Labs . Olympic medal table from http://www.london2012.com/medals/medal-count/

The percentage of IPv6 networks (ASes) in a country that announce an IPv6 prefix is an indicator of how many networks have at least taken some first steps at deploying IPv6. The percentage of end users that are preferring IPv6 over IPv4 is an indicator of real deployment to end users. The difference between networks and end users is a rough indication of the number of networks in the process of deploying IPv6.

Overall, there are big differences in IPv6 deployment metrics between individual countries.

We can conclude that not only does it have the best athletes in the world, the US is also flying pretty high in the IPv6 deployment stakes. While only 10.3% of US networks (ASes) announce an IPv6 prefix, these networks do cause 1.43% of end users in the US to prefer IPv6, making the US come in second in this category.

France, however, leads the pack of IPv6 end users with over 4.5% of end users preferring IPv6. France does have some some work to do on the athletics side of things and still has some way to go to get the entire nation ready for IPv6.

Although pretty good in shooting, archery and martial arts, South Korea is coming in a whole lap behind everyone else in the IPv6 race, with only 2.9% of networks prepared for IPv6, resulting in only 0.01% of end users preferring IPv6.

We are also analysing traffic levels at various Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) during the Olympics - stay tuned!

About the author

Emile Aben Based in Amsterdam, NL

I'm a system architect/research coordinator at the RIPE NCC, where I work in the science group. I'm a chemist by training, but have been working since 1998 on Internet related things, as a sysadmin, security consultant, web developer and researcher. I am interested in technology changes (like IPv6 deployment), Internet measurement, data analysis, data visualisation, sustainability and security. I'd like to bring research and operations closer together, ie. do research that is operationally relevant. When I'm not working I like to make music (electric guitar, bass and drums), do sports (swimming, (inline) skating, bouldering, soccer), and try to be a good parent.
