Top Ten Olympic Winners and Indicators of IPv6 Preparedness

Olympic fever didn't escape us here at the RIPE NCC!


As every nation beams with pride for its medal winners, we decided to see how well the top ten medal-winning countries are doing with their IPv6 planning by analysing indicators of IPv6 deployment, and to see if there are reasons to be proud of that too.

The percentage of IPv6 networks (ASes) in a country that announce an IPv6 prefix is an indicator of how many networks have at least taken some first steps at deploying IPv6. The percentage of end users that are preferring IPv6 over IPv4 is an indicator of real deployment to end users. The difference between networks and end users is a rough indication of the number of networks in the process of deploying IPv6.

Overall, there are big differences in IPv6 deployment metrics between individual countries.

We can conclude that not only does it have the best athletes in the world, the US is also flying pretty high in the IPv6 deployment stakes. While only 10.3% of US networks (ASes) announce an IPv6 prefix, these networks do cause 1.43% of end users in the US to prefer IPv6, making the US come in second in this category. 

France, however, leads the pack of IPv6 end users with over 4.5% of end users preferring IPv6. France does have some some work to do on the athletics side of things and still has some way to go to get the entire nation ready for IPv6.

Although pretty good in shooting, archery and martial arts, South Korea is coming in a whole lap behind everyone else in the IPv6 race, with only 2.9% of networks prepared for IPv6, resulting in only 0.01% of end users preferring IPv6.
