The RIPE NCC mirrored this dataset until 2019. The original data can be found here: https://web.eecs.umich.edu/~harshavm/iplane/ . This dataset contains traceroutes from PlanetLab nodes and traceroute servers that were done as part of the iPlane project at the University of Washington between 2006 and 2016.

Vasileios, in order to download the data sets from RIPE Labs, you need to create an account and agree to the terms and conditions (as described above under "Access Requirements"). Please let us know if you still have problems downloading the data set then.
Joshua Juen •
I signed up for an account and accepted the terms for the data access....it still says forbidden. Am I missing something or are the servers down?
Mirjam Kühne •
Hi Joshua, thanks for letting us know. There seems to be a problem. We're looking into it.
Mirjam Kühne •
Joshua, we had to resurrect the server, but it should work again now. Sorry about that.
Meenakshi Syamkumar •
Hi, Is there a way to download multiple days dataset without having to do them individually? Also do you have any API's which will permit me to download the datasets using wget?

Emile Aben •
Hi Meenakshi, I think you'll have to download the files individually. I think, if your RIPE Access account doesn't have 2 factor authentication, you can use wget to download the files with the --user and --password options.
Sagnik Das •
Was using wget --user=****** --password=****** https://data-store.ripe.net/datasets/iplane-traceroutes/2016/traces_2016_08_15.tar.gz downloads ~58kb tar file whereas the file is 836M. Am I doing something wrong?

Mirjam Kühne •
Dear Sagnik, it is not possible to use wget with username and password. You need to log in to RIPE NCC Access which will set a cookie, then save the cookie in a file and tell wget to use it. I hope this helpw.
Yuying Chen •

Zixin Tao •
Hi, I've downloaded the compressed file, e.g. traces_2015_7_30.tar.gz. After depressed the file, there is a set of archives in this file, e.g.trace.out.pl2.cs.montana.edu. Through other measurement, I find this file should be a JSON file. But now the file is consist of hexadecimal numbers, just like: d17c bcf6. So now I don't know how to decode this hexadecimal content into JSON format, looking for help. Thanks a lot.
Zixin Tao •
Hi, I want to know how to decode the download file into JSON file. There is an exception "UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xe8 in position 8: invalid continuation byte" when I read the file using file.readlin() in Python. So can you please help me? Thanks a lot.

Hi Zixin, the iPlane data is in a format defined by the iplane project. I remember that there was a tool on the iPlane website to decode the data, but i didn't find it anymore, i suggest to contact the iPlane team for access to this tool. On github there is a tool that might also be able to read these files, which i haven't tried myself but it looks promising: https://github.com/syakesaba/iplane .

Paul de Weerd •
Hi Dali, There was an issue with an intermediate system granting access to the dataset; this issue has been fixed, and we believe it is now working as intended again. Please let us know if you still experience any problems. Cheers!
Chenglei Wu •
Hello, I tried to download this dataset, but the webpage keeps redirecting to https://labs.ripe.net/datarepository/. Could you please email me this dataset and NLANR AMP Data. Thanks!

Paul de Weerd •
Dear Chenglei, The full iplane traceroute dataset is 5.5TB; sending this over e-mail is not feasible. However, the service should work but doesn't right now. We'll investigate and fix ASAP. Apologies for the inconvenience. Cheers!
