March for the RIPE community means time to gear up for the first RIPE Meeting of the year. The RIPE Chair Team reports on preparation for RIPE 90 and other topics and events keeping the community busy this month.
RIPE 90
The RIPE 90 meeting in Lisbon is approaching fast. We received a good number of proposals for plenary presentations and the RIPE Programme Committee (PC) had their first call to evaluate them. There are still some slots left and the PC decided to extend the deadline to 8 April.
Working groups are also seeking content proposals. Please contact the WG chairs if there is a topic you would like to discuss.
Please register for RIPE 90 now. You can also win a ticket by participating in the RIPE Labs competition! On the RIPE 90 meeting pages you can find a lot of useful information about the meeting, the venue and the beautiful city of Lisbon. We will also provide childcare again.
I am happy to note that the RIPE NCC has secured venues for the next RIPE Meetings already and we are already planning for up to RIPE 100!
RIPE Code of Conduct Team
As mentioned in an earlier update, we welcomed a number of new members to the RIPE Code of Conduct Team. All members followed a professional training and will be available for you at RIPE 90. Since the term of some of the team members will end soon, we are looking for new volunteers. You can find more information about the RIPE Code of Conduct, the appointment and responsibilities of the team members and the nominations process on the RIPE website.
WG co-chair selections
The following working groups will be looking for new co-chairs prior to RIPE 90:
- Address Policy WG (as announced on their mailing list)
- IoT WG
If you are interested to volunteer now or in the future, please take a look at the training modules for RIPE WG chairs.
RIPE Chair Team selection
The call for nominations for the next RIPE Chair Team is still open until the end of the month. I was happy to hear that I have been nominated for another term and have confirmed my nomination.
Policy update
The policy proposal 2024-02, "IPv6 Initial Allocations /28 " v2 is now up for discussion. This proposal aims to change the initial IPv6 allocation size from /29 to /28.
In the Routing WG a discussion related to the “Automatic Revocation of Persistently Non-functional Delegated RPKI CAs” is ongoing. This might be submitted as a formal policy proposal soon.
Please also note a discussion in the IPv6 WG related to multihoming with load balancing.
ASO AC and ICP-2
The Address Supporting Organization Address Council (ASO AC) reviewed the feedback received on the principles for updating the Criteria for the Establishment of New RIRs (ICP-2) and is now working on a draft document. You can find a lot more information about the principles, the current status and next steps on the NRO website.
At RIPE 90, there will be a BoF session to discuss this topic with the ASO AC members from the RIPE community.
Industry events
Session with new ICANN CEO: On 12 February, I attended a webinar with the new CEO of ICANN, Kurtis Lindqvist who was the co-chair of the RIPE NCC Services WG since its inception and an active RIPE participants almost from the beginning. It was interesting to listen to his take on this new role. Kurtis said that the "multistakeholder process is not just an input but also an output process: It provides learning opportunities. People learns new skills that they gained through the multistakeholder process."
Government Roundtable: On 18 February, I participated in the roundtable meeting in Brussels. Also in this round, the multistakeholder process received support and it's success was stressed by the participants. It was also good to hear that RIPE and the technical community was recognised as a source of expertise.
DNS Hackathon: Niall participated in the DNS Hackathon that took place in Stockholm on 15 - 16 March and also the Netnod meeting on 18 - 19 March.
Upcoming events
INEX: On 20 March Niall will then attend the INEX meeting in Dublin.
RIPE NCC Executive Board meeting: On 20 - 21 March I will attend the RIPE NCC executive board meeting in Amsterdam.
