Navigating the Complexities of Effective Website Search
• 5 min read
Search on www.ripe.net is an important feature that has been lacking in usability, and the behaviour was changed during the recent redesign. In this article, we’ll dive a little deeper into the complexities of website search and review why this change was implemented.
“Many people visiting RIPE Web site have a RIPE Access account. Are there plans to use their search history to provide context, which helps a lot in Web search? (And also raises a lot of touchy privacy issues. IMHO, "anonymous" users, those not logged in RIPE Access must be excluded of this feature. But the privacy issue also holds for logged-in users.)”
Hi Stéphane, thanks for the great question. Our initial aim is to improve the results for all visitors, whether logged-in or anonymous. While tailoring search for logged-in individuals isn't something that exists in our current plans, we will definitely consider adding it to the roadmap.
“These are all good points. I especially like the idea of search suggestions. Another useful refinement would be to default search results newest first and oldest last. At the moment, documents and pages are mixed together and not ordered by date. This can make searching for the one document you want a real slog.”
Hi Leo, thanks for the comment! I can confirm that among the many improvements we plan to make, custom sorting is one of them and is towards the top of our priority list for the website.
